“When I received notice that the small company, I worked for was most likely going out of business I was terrified. My previous job search experience after leaving the military had been very disappointing. After multiple interviews with big companies and several "runner up" notices I had finally given up. I felt like nobody appreciated my military service and that in fact it was the reason why I couldn't close the deal. I settled for going to a job agency and taking whatever they had because I needed money to feed my family. I was lucky in the fact that even though the job I took didn't pay much compared to what I had been making before it did give me opportunity to learn new things and expand my expertise in the area of IT Software Development.

Six years later I had a totally different skill set, but all I could think of was that fact that nobody would want to hire me again. I was thinking I was going to have to start over again, even going so far as considering going back to school for a career change. At this point is where Lina comes in. Together we evaluated my new skill set and determined this job search would be totally different than the previous one. She made me realize that now I had solid IT Industry experience and that the different roles I had taken during my time in my company had prepared me for something more challenging. Honestly, even though my current job was going away I had really outgrown it. Regardless of what would happen with my company I really needed to move on and tackle more challenging work in different environment.

She forced me to think and write down what I wanted in my ideal job. It was harder than I thought to complete that exercise as I kept writing down what I would settle with. Once I had this written down she forced my to concentrate and look for opportunities that closely matched my description and not to settle for less. With a little more enthusiasm than before I updated my LinkedIn profile with my new skills and opened myself up to recruiters. I also placed a few applications as well. To my surprise I actually received calls back! Shortly after doing this a recruiter contacted me because my skill set matched what they were looking for. They quickly set up an interview for me even though I had not even filled out an application. Even at this stage I was afraid to go. What if this was going to be more disappointment as before? At this point Lina turned into my cheerleader. Encouraging me to go to the interview, do my best and to give this new company a chance.

Not only did the interview go better than I expected, the company ended up meeting all the criteria Lina forced me to write down and think about! The interview process with them was the fastest I have ever experienced, and they wanted me right away.

Sometimes even if you have the experience you need someone to help you take action. Someone to encourage you to take chances. Someone to help you realize that you do add value and the past doesn't have to repeat itself. Lina was this person for me, and I am eternally grateful that I had the privilege of working with her.”
